Baraboo police department looking for new community service officers

Allison Goetz is a Baraboo native who has been working as a non-sworn officer and community worker. After more than 20 years of service, she is ready to retire and help prepare her replacement for the rigors of the job.

Goetz earned her degree in animal sciences from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls back in 1986. She never imagined that her career would lead to her handing out Business Cards that say 'Baraboo Police Department' on them. She also did not realize that she would spend her days doing work that involves coordinating search and rescue efforts for escaped cows.

The Baraboo Police Chief stated that community service officers assist in a number of duties. They are tasked with helping with parking violations as well as keeping weeds from taking over public spaces and ensuring that community members keep their lawns mowed and presentable. Flyer printing and posting notices about road closures can also be a part of their job description.

Gordy Ringelstetter, who served as community officer for 33 years in the same department, retired early in May. More than 40 people have applied to fill the positions left vacant by Gordy and Allison. Training the new officers generally takes about two years because the new officers have to learn about how Baraboo operates.

The selection process will take up to two months and the people selected for the posts can expect to earn about $17.86 per hour.
