Baraboo makes case for bike route

If Baraboo leaders have their way, a national bike route could soon wind its way through the city, providing a boost to the economy.

The Plan Commission recently chose to give its full support in

including Baraboo in the U. S. Bike Route System. The current proposal indicates that it will go through either it or Sauk City as it crosses the state. According to Commissioner Roy Franzen, if Baraboo is chosen, this would add yet another amenity to the community, making it even more attractive to visitors and potential residents alike.

It was also noted that adding this new bike route could be very beneficial to the local economy. As Commissioner Pat Liston pointed out, bicycle trails can really draw people to a city, and in those communities that have them, they often make a significant contribution to the economy. Those who use them may stop and spend money during their stay.

If Baraboo is selected to host a portion of the bike trail, the city would add signage to the existing roadways and cycle paths that would be used. Items such as these and maps of the route can be produced by a printing company.

Mike Hardy, who is the Baraboo’s Parks and Recreation Director remarked that the initial discussions about adding the bike trail to the city’s infrastructure actually began several years ago. He brought this to the attention of the state Department of Transportation and the city.
