Wider highway to be ready for travel later this month

Interstate 5 through Tacoma will have new carpool lanes later this month, making this a major milestone for an important roadwork project in Pierce County.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has been working in the area since 2019. As crews worked to widen the highway, there were lane shift, closures, and new configurations. Part of the work also included repaving the roads, installing new lighting, and building a new Puyallup River Bridge.

The WSDOT said that these HOV lanes will be an important step toward improving transportation in the county and was one of the remaining aspects of the project. These new lanes in Tacoma and Fife will now connect the HOV system of the interstate between Interstate 5 in King County and State Route 16 in Gig Harbor. Local Print shops often help spread the word about such road improvements to travelers with Flyers and other printed materials.

Work remaining on this project includes some restoration of the river habitat and new landscaping; rebuilding the State Route 167 on-ramp to southbound Interstate 5; and fortification of the levy.

The new HOV lanes are expected to open in a couple of weeks in addition to the opening of the newly East L Street Bridge, which spans Interstate 5 in Tacoma, and will feature dedicated bike lanes, wider sidewalks, and more lanes for vehicles.
