The new program, Maritime 253, is now open for enrollment for high school attending the Tacoma Public Schools.
This program is designed to address the shortage across the country of professionals in the maritime industry. There is no tuition for the program. It provides hands-on experience for juniors and seniors in logistics, manufacturing, and marine technology. Educators, tribal members, representatives from the Port of Tacoma, and local builders welcomed and greeted the first set of students in the program.
Maritime 253 is the first program like this in the country. The Port of Tacoma played an important role in developing the curriculum along with the Tacoma Public Schools. Students in the program attend standard high school academic classes for half their day while being at the port facility for the other half. By the end of the academic year, students will have over 1,000 hours of credentials recognized in the industry, college credits, and hands-on training.
Brochure printing can be used to provide more details about such programs and their benefits for students and the maritime industry.
Developed as part of the waterfront campus at the Port of Tacoma, Maritime 253 is a regional skills center operated by Tacoma Public Schools that provides technical and career education opportunities for high school students throughout Pierce County. The campus will also include a new Port of Tacoma commission chambers and business operations center that is expected to open next spring.
