Proposed changes to the off-street parking regulations for the city of Tacoma have been released by the Planning Commission. The Commission is inviting members of the community to share their feedback at a public hearing to be held next month.
The proposed changes are largely in response to recent state legislation that restricts the ability of cities to impose off-street parking requirements. The updates align the local code with the new state law while advancing key community goals, including redevelopment of surface parking lots, support for multimodal transportation, greater housing affordability, and increased flexibility for property owners to decide how much parking to provide. These draft changes do not affect on-street parking regulations.
The draft changes also address accessible parking requirements. Consistent with direction from the Planning Commission, the proposal removes these requirements from the zoning code and instead relies on the applicable state building code and federal standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act to regulate accessible parking wherever parking is provided.
Details about such proposed changes can be disseminated throughout a community with flyer printing and other printed materials.
The feedback from the community so far has prioritized the creation of more green space, the safety of cyclists and pedestrians, and the development of walkable neighborhoods.
The hearing will be held in the Council Chambers of the Tacoma Municipal Building beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday August 5.
