What's Happening in Tacoma, WA…

Tacoma receives funding for major traffic projects

The Washington State Department of Transportation has awarded the city of Tacoma two grants to facilitate traffic and ease congestion in two major parts of the city.

The first is an amount of $2.04 million, with an additional $443,000 match by the city, to support improvements around Stewart Middle School as part of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. Among the upgrades planned are a new signal for pedestrians at South 52nd Street and Pacific Avenue, safer intersections, traffic calming, sidewalk connections, and greenway in the neighborhood. In addition, students at the school collaborated with a local artist to paint intersection murals, which were initially set to be temporary but now will become permanent with the funding.

The second is an amount of $1.5 million, which requires no matching grant from the city, for the planning and design of improvements to safety along South Tacoma Way between South 60th Street and Pine Street. South Tacoma Way was identified as a priority for working to eliminate serious and fatal crashes from speed studies, crash data, and input from the community. There will be extensive engagement from the community, alternative designs, and planning for streets in the area to address the diversion of traffic.

Local print shops can help spread the word about such projects throughout a city with the use of flyers, posters, and other printed materials.

Construction on the first project ss expected to begin in 2028, while work on the second one is likely to start next year.
