On particularly cold days, the City of Tacoma will be offering a warming center for those living on the street or without the funds for their utility bills.
The Eastside Community Center will be the warming center and is owned by Metro Parks Tacoma. It is operated by Valeo and will provide a place where those in need can get a hot meal, stay, and get access to resources such as employment and housing options. Posters can be created by Print shops and displayed around the city so people know of services like this.
Assistant director of neighborhood and community services for the City of Tacoma, Allyson Griffith, said that such a center can help those who are homeless and provide a transition from living on the street.
Griffith said that the center is available only on specific days. Those days are determined every Monday for the upcoming week and are based on the forecast of the weather. She said that the criteria are days when the temperature is expected to be as low as 32°F, or 35°F if snow, wind, or rain is in the forecast. The outreach team is also working to provide bus passes to those who live some distance from the warming center so they can make it to the Eastside.
