Light rail line extension planned in Tacoma

An alternative for the Link Extension to Tacoma Dome has been decided by the Sound Transit Board of Directors.

This will include a route through South Federal Way, Milton, and into Tacoma. The Tacoma Dome will also have a station as part of this plan.

Dow Constantine, CEO of Sound Transit, said that this decision brings the service closer to delivering a three-county, world class light rail system. He added that having the extension to Tacoma Dome will transform regional travel, meaning people will come to wonder how they ever traveled without the station.

The light rail extension will align with State Route 99 as opposed to the original plan to align with Interstate 5. Cultural artifacts were found along the highway, which this new route will avoid.

It is projected that the cost of the Tacoma Dome Link Extension will be $4.63bn. This extension is part of the Sound Transit 3 Plan costing $54bn that was approved by voters in 2016.

Local Print shops can help provide more detailed information about such planned projects and construction and completion dates with Flyers and other printed materials.

A final decision on the project will not be made until the Environmental Impact statement is published. This is expected to be in 2027, although an in-service date of 2035 is anticipated.
