A hands-on Seattle activity is set to teach the basics of preparing stone jewelry, and each attendee in the workshop will be able to prepare their own special piece.
Carkeek Park is set to be visited by the registrants in the Find Your Own/ Cut Your Own class that will be on offer this July. It is being organized by NW Rockhounds, and it will teach the process of collecting, polishing and preparing a rough stone.
Instructor Carly Van derHyde will be the facilitator for the day, and the group will head out to the park to find and collect the stone they will transform into a cabochon. Tips will be provided for what material will be best to use, and everyone should wear comfortable footwear and bring snacks and water.
The second part of the workshop, which will take place the next day, will see the learners cut and polish their stone. Everyone will get to use the equipment, and it was explained that as it may be noisy, hearing protection will be worn. The session may be used as one of the prerequisites to the Advanced Lapidary course. Copies of handouts as well as certificates of completion for an activity can be prepared by Stationery printers.
This introduction to the art and science of choosing, gathering and polishing raw stone is scheduled to begin on July 13th at Carkeek Park. The next session will be held the following day at NW Rockhounds, located at 2720 NE 115th Suite A.
