Seattle session to create new crop of lichen lovers
A symbiotic partnership between fungi and algae that therefore does not quite fit in either category, lichens are an organism of fascination to many, and a Seattle workshop will introduce them to local nature lovers.
The University of Washington's Botanic Gardens serve as a reservoir of biodiversity, offering a variety of public programming throughout the year. One of these, which is on the agenda for early next year, will explore lichens and their role in the ecosystem, including their potential benefits to the home gardener.
The attendees in the morning activity will learn about lichens, and there will be an emphasis on the species that call the Seattle area home. The facilitator will discuss how they can survive in urban environments, and everyone in the class will find out the ways they may be used to help determine a city’s air quality.
Those planning the session are hopeful the workshop will spark an interest among the participants, and to help them continue their studies, they will provide each with a chart designed to aid in lichen ID. Stationery printers can supply a variety of learning materials for an organized event.
This in-person introduction to lichens will be on offer on Friday, February 3, 2023. The University of Washington Botanic gardens is located at 2300 Arboretum Drive. The registration fee is $45 per person.
