Those who grow large fruit in their home garden may benefit from being part of a workshop that will introduce the gardening public to the art and science of pruning.
While pruning may sound like a complicated and laborious process, the Large Fruit Tree Care class coming up at Seattle’s Good Shepherd Center will help to take the guesswork out of the practice. It will be a three-hour session, and as it will include both lecture and outdoor components, everyone is advised to dress appropriately.
The attendees will learn why pruning in winter may be a particularly good idea, and they will be introduced to the use of both a pole pruner and pruning saw. They will discover how, when and why to make different cuts, and a discussion of how integrated pest control techniques can result in heavy crop is in the works as well. Non-chemical insect control methods will be shared, and everyone will get hands-on practice in making pruning cuts.
The listing for the workshop explained that there will also be a class on offer for those who cultivate small fruit, or who grow larger fruit using espalier techniques. Handouts for any learning session like this will be available at area Stationery printers.
