What's Happening in Richland, WA…

Print Companies in Richland

Richland, Washington, is one of the Tri-Cities; the others are Pasco and Kennewick. The three are about 175 miles east of Portland, Oregon, at the confluence of the Columbia and Yakima Rivers. Its development is an interesting one, and printing, as usual, plays its part in the development of industry here.

Early days and development

Native Americans of the Walla Walla, Yakama, and Wanapum tribes lived in the village of Chemna, located at the current Yakima River’s mouth, for centuries. The tribes fished for the salmon coming to the Yakima River. The Lewis and Clark Expedition came to the Yakima River in October 1805. Settlement and development by people of European descent began early in the 20th century.

The intriguing history of the area is chronicled by the East Benton County Historical Society, which operates a museum. They offer programs and exhibits to illustrate the county’s heritage. Facilities like this help people enjoy their visits even more by using catalog printing to create guidebooks to the exhibits.

A town founded by the Army

During the Second World War, the U.S. Army bought over 600 square miles of land near the Columbia River, taking over the small agricultural community of Richland in the process. The Army then built housing for the people who were working at the Hanford Engineering Works on the Manhattan Project. The Hanford Engineering Works are now known as the Hanford site, which is an important part of Richland’s history.

By the end of the conflict, the population of the community had grown to 25,000 from the original 300 residents. The government owned all the buildings and the land, and assigned housing to residents, placing families in houses and single people in barracks or apartments. The government provided for everyone’s needs, supplying everything from light bulbs to bus services for free.

Richland’s connection to the Army is reflected in its street names, which are often those of engineers such as George Washington Way and Stevens Drive. Washington, in addition to being the first U.S. President, was also a surveyor, and John Frank Stevens was the Panama Canal’s chief engineer.

At the end of the war, many people moved from the housing development to Richland proper, creating the stable community that exists today. Officials of any company, not just a governmental body, makes use of stationery printing to create their appropriate letterheads and also customized stationery by designing and printing items like mugs and pens.

Richland today

Perhaps because it dealt with the government, Richland has attracted a number of technology companies that are important to the economy. Among those doing business here are Bechtel National, Inc., the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Lockheed Martin Services. However, Richland also has a strong agricultural sector, and is recognized as a center for wine making.

No matter what a company does, it needs certain materials to operate smoothly. Companies here can turn to stationery printers for some of these supplies and use a business card printing service for this important sales tool.

The great outdoors

Richland has a number of parks, trails, and recreational areas that tempt people to come outside and play. Often, outdoor venues are used for parties, reunions, fairs, and similar activities. Organizers can use poster printing to create signs to help people find the events.

Richland’s history is long and complex, creating a community that meets the challenges of the 21st century.
