Kennewick celebrates university's birthday

The Tri-City area, including Kennewick, has something to celebrate later this month, as the Tri-Cities campus of Washington State University celebrates its 25th anniversary with a week of commemorative events.

The college first began offering courses in 1989 with a limited selection of classes, including graduate level courses. In 2007, the school began accepting freshmen and sophomores and became a full four-year university.

The schedule for the week is varied. Events include a ‘Night with the Arts’, which will highlight local artists and musical acts, a series of lectures, and a Coug jubilee, which will offer a variety of activities for people of all ages. Also on the calendar the birthday week is the unveiling of a historical timeline for the university campus.

Marisela Garza, the development coordinator for the campus' office of regional development and advancement, told the Tri City Herald that the events will both celebrate the school's past and look to its future.

Last year's freshman class was the largest ever for the college, with 135 students. Administrators have made estimates that this year's class will be even larger. The college is also in the midst of an expansion and is currently building a Wine Science Center.

All events during the birthday celebration are open to the public and are free of charge throughout the week of September 22 to 27.
