Puyallup residents who would like to learn how to grow food for their own table will have an opportunity to do so when they participate in an online learning activity.
The Apiaceae family, which includes plants such as carrots and parsnips, will be the topic of the Growing Groceries workshop, and lettuce and corn will also be in the mix. Some can be grown year-round while others are planted for harvest during the spring, summer, or autumn. Soil Sisters Plants and Produce’s Kate Ryan will be the presenter for the occasion.
The registrants will learn how to build a good soil, and selecting the right seed variety will be discussed as well. Pest control, fertilization, and harvesting are also on the agenda, and it was explained that the Growing Groceries initiative is a production of the WSU Snohomish County Master Gardeners. The tips can be helpful for any size of garden, and they will be kind to the environment.
The Covid pandemic has generated an increased interest in gardening, and virtual workshops offer a safe way to deliver learning to these budding green thumbs. Preparing horticultural starter kits that contain informational materials prepared by a brochure printing company will make it easier for them to get started.
This introduction to the culture and care for members of the Apiaceae, Asteraceae and Poaceae (corn and other grasses) plant families will be held on February 23. The participation fee is $5.
