As of tomorrow, October 1, uncertified wood burning stoves are not permitted in the Tacoma/Pierce County Smoke Reduction Zone, which includes Puyallup.
Unless the property has no other sources of adequate heat and the owner has properly applied for and received an exemption, all uncertified wood burning stoves were need to be removed or classified as inoperable by today.
The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency Board of Directors put the rule into effect in order to satisfy federal requirements. The Washington State legislature granted the power to prohibit residents from using uncertified wood burning devices in certain areas to local pollution control agencies and the Washington Department of Ecology.
The rule is not applicable to fireplaces, but rather the inserts placed in a fireplace opening, which constitutes the wood burning stove. However, residents are still not permitted to use fireplaces during air quality burn bans.
The program ran out of funding, so no new incentives were able to be provided after a certain date to help residents to upgrade stoves.
Those unsure of whether their wood burning stove is certified, should look for a label indicating the device is compliant with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emission standards. Officials may have opted to work with professional Print company for poster printing to share notices of the upcoming rule and sample images of the certification label.
