Book giveaway project kicks off in Puyallup

Comforting Stories, a project created by the Puyallup Public Library in collaboration with the Puyallup Police Department to provide Books to children in crisis situations, is getting underway.

The effort was started when Library Services Director, Patty Ross, heard of a similar program in Wisconsin where the Police department comforted children with donated teddy bears.

Efforts such as this one are successful throughout the country, and volunteers could benefit by soliciting support from printing companies for Direct Mail printing and marketing services to notify residents of their efforts in the hope of obtaining more donations.

The Books will be used to comfort children who are in situations where they are stressed or worried. Often, situations like these are made easier when a child has a diversion from the issues at hand and the library hopes the ability for the police force to hand a child a book will help them get through the crisis.

Through Ross’ efforts, the library collected over 50 Books ranging in reading levels from preschool through sixth grade. The Books collected are a mixture of those written in English and Spanish. They are brand new and, fortunately, the department has yet to use any of them.

Depending on the demand, Ross is willing to continue obtaining Books through donations and local support to help area children in need. The current group of Books were donated by the Friends of the Puyallup Library.
