The Village Theatre in Issaquah is promising an over-the-top production of ‘Dreamgirls’ to wind up its current season. The show opens in Issaquah for several weeks before it moves to Everett to end the run.
The musical, a collaboration between lyricist Tom Eyen and musician Henry Krieger, opened on Broadway in 1981. The show was nominated for thirteen Tonys, including Best Musical, and won six. It tells the story of a female vocal trio from Chicago who call themselves ‘The Dreams’ and want to break into show business. The show chronicles their adventures and misadventures as they climb to the top. Although the story is fictional, it calls to mind real groups such as The Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, and the Shirelles.
Village Theatre's production features Angela Birchett in the role of Effie. Birchett is a singer and actress with an international reputation, who recently appeared in ‘The Color Purple’ on Broadway. This is Birchett's first appearance with the Village Theatre. Also in the cast are Lauren Du Pree as Deena, Alexandria Henderson as Lorrell, and John Devereaux as Curtis.
‘Dreamgirls’ started running yesterday and stays in Issaquah until July 2, then it moves to Everett from July 7 to 30.
Productions like this can benefit if producers work with a poster printing company to create colorful placards announcing the show.
