Gig Harbor forms Nordic sister-city relationship

Gig Harbor is about to become the sister city of a town north of the Arctic Circle.

Bodø is in the north of Norway, and is Nordland County’s capital. On July 25, the Gig Harbor City Council voted in favor of a resolution to form a relationship between the two cities for reasons including boosting cultural understanding and helping to create exchange opportunities for students and adults.

The idea for the sister-city relationship has been in development since 2019. The idea was brought forward by the local Rotary clubs which wanted to form relationships with Croatia and Norway. In 2021, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave a donation worth $3,000 for an event in Gig Harbor that celebrated Norway.

The agreement for the sister-city relationship does not oblige Gig Harbor to commit to any specific actions. It just states that they will work together to organize activities and events. The agreement also allows for the creation of an organization that will manage sister-city activities. A Logo Design can be created specifically for joint events.

During that same council meeting, the local council gave the mayor the green light to appoint new members on the committees for the arts commission, the parks commission, and the lodging tax advisory committee. The previous procedure for appointing these roles involved three council members conducting interviews. With the new procedure, the mayor makes recommendations that the council can approve or reject.
