An interesting name
The word “gig” today refers to a musical engagement, sometimes only one night, but Gig Harbor got its name for an entirely different reason. In 1840, during a violent storm, a naval captain named Charles Wilkes landed in a sheltered harbor in the captain’s gig, a small boat used by a ship’s captain to go ashore when there is no way for his ship to dock. Wilkes mapped the Oregon Territory, and when the map was published in 1841, he named the small bay Gig Harbor. Wilkes was the leader of the United States Exploring Expedition, which took place from 1838-1842.
Gig Harbor is home to several facilities documenting the history of the community, including a museum and the Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society.
