Aberdeen to get green-fingered

A fundraiser is coming up in Aberdeen to help support a local organization.

The Cultivating Roots Community Garden makes it possible for residents of Pacific Courts to enjoy the outdoors as they work together in the garden. The volunteers and workers who help with the cultivation sell plant starts and fresh produce at the Aberdeen Sunday Market. The money they raise helps to maintain the garden.

The inspiration for the garden is a program based in Thurston County called the GRuB (Garden Raised Bounty) Youth Program. Through this effort, low-income or disadvantaged students can earn credits as they learn about how food is grown locally.

Working in the garden makes the lesson a highly personal one. The program focuses on three aspects of farming – Farming Community, which addresses community service and civic engagement; Farming Land, which is learning about stewardship and sustainable growing methods; and Farming Self, focusing on personal development.

Now, the First Annual Cultivating Roots Community Garden Fundraiser is on the schedule, and it will be held at the garden this Saturday, October 1. It is a family-friendly event, with all ages welcome. Although there is no fee to attend, donations will be appreciated. Hosts are planning tours, raffles, activities for the youngsters, and a BBQ. The hours are 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm, and the garden is at 357 Oak Street. Local events like these can be publicized if organizers use flyer printing to create handouts.
