Work starts on Longhill Road

Longhill Road in Williamsburg will be widened this summer, between the intersection of Devon and Olde Towne roads and Williamsburg West Drive. Road crews have got the project underway by clearing trees in order to facilitate burying power lines in the area.

A spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Brittany McBride Nichols, said utilities impacted by the Longhill Road Widening Project are being moved now to make it simpler to start work in the summer, when the power lines will be buried. She added the trees would have been removed no matter whether the lines were above ground or underground.

VDOT said Longhill Road will increase in width from two lanes to four in the stretch that starts about 1,000 feet west of the Devon and Olde Towne roads intersection, and runs slightly east of Williamsburg West Drive. The project, which has a price tag of $19.8 million, should start this summer, and take about a year to complete. As projects like this get underway, officials can use poster printing to help show motorists where detours and other traffic difficulties may occur.

Not only will the project widen the travel lanes, but crosswalks, a roundabout, and a shared-use path 10 feet wide will also be built. The outside lanes on both sides will be widened to give bicyclists room to share the road.
