Williamsburg uses 2018 study for city planning

Four years ago, a study was published that detailed a plan to bring more life to the downtown Williamsburg area. Some of those recommendations are now a reality, while others are yet to be achieved.

The study was called the Downtown Vibrancy, Design & Marketing Plan, and was created by a team of consultants that included The Riddle Company, Group Melvin Design and Econsult Solutions, Inc. The team took a few months to gather the necessary information on such matters as infrastructure, parking, streetscape elements, and architectural character. Official Letterheads are often seen on documents like this one.

The executive summary on the documents states:

“The objective of the plan is to strengthen downtown’s appeal by creating a vibrant environment, to develop a sustainable implementation and improve the prospects for success.”

The report asked for the Triangle Area to get a new entertainment district. Merchants Square was put up for a redesign and a City Park was proposed for the space between the library and the Urban Grocer. The plan also proposed that mixed-use developments should be built.

Numerous other improvements were included in the study, although the city’s legislators pointed out that not all of the propositions could be implemented. The council’s decision to have dining on Duke of Gloucester Street, and outdoor dining, was based on recommendations from the plan.
