A major holiday is coming up that seems tailor-made for a celebration in Williamsburg.
The holiday, of course, is the 4th of July, and celebrating it in one of the oldest cities in the country seems appropriate. There are a great many things happening in the city on that day to celebrate the nation's birth.
In Colonial Williamsburg, a full day of activities is planned. Celebrations start off at 9.30 am, when Thomas Jefferson reads the Declaration of Independence from the Capitol West Balcony. Colonial Williamsburg's Fifes and Drums will be on hand to play field music of the Revolutionary War.
At 10.00 am, the Salute to the States takes place. At this event, the flags of the original 13 states are displayed, the Fifes and Drums play, and cannon and muskets are fired in celebration.
In 1716, the first theater in Colonial America was built, and though it is no longer standing, its spirit is honored at the Play House Stage. Here, at 11.30 am and again at 1.30 pm, the Chowing family will perform one of their own plays.
At 12.00 pm, the Declaration of Independence will be read again, this time at the steps of the colonial Courthouse, located on Duke of Gloucester Street. There will be several other live performances, and a fireworks display starting at 9.20 pm ends the day. Flyer printing can create useful guides for those attending events like this.
