Williamsburg appoints temporary fire chief

Williamsburg’s city manager recently named an interim fire chief to serve in the post, pending the retirement of the current head of the department, according to an article on the city’s website.

William “Pat” Dent, the current fire chief, will be retiring soon. Andrew Trivette, the city manager, appointed Deputy Fire Chief Larry Snyder to take over the department as interim fire chief.

Trivette described the Williamsburg Fire Department as a “high-performance organization” with a staff that is committed and well trained. The department protects both the city and the surrounding area, and Trivette wants to make the period of transition as smooth as possible for everyone concerned. The process of selecting a new fire chief will begin soon and continue through the middle of July. Fire chiefs from throughout the state will sit on a panel to conduct interviews of candidates. The chiefs will be assisted in this process by the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association. It is anticipated that it will take several weeks to find the right candidate. The city manager will appoint the new chief once he or she has been identified.

Larry Snyder joined the department in 2014 as deputy chief. Before that, he was a Hanover County firefighter, a position he held since 2001. With the county, he served in operations, logistics, and fire crew training.

Snyder will take over the position on July 1.
