William & Mary opening medical offices in Williamsburg

The City of Williamsburg recently announced that new medical facilities could open in the city.

According to city officials, the College of William and Mary recently applied for a permit that would allow the institution to operate a medical office, as well as traditional offices, from a location on North Henry Street. The university's Real Estate Foundation submitted the request, and would be the lessor; the school would lease the premises from the Foundation.

The application stated that the university's health services department has grown over the years, and now needs more space. Universities throughout the nation in general are expanding their health services to students, because young people are facing complex issues, from substance abuse to mental and emotional health concerns. To meet the changing needs of students, William and Mary has also changed, focusing more on physical, intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual, physical, and financial aspects of college life. Brochure printing can be used to list the services offered by facilities like this.

The foundation's application states that if health services are no longer needed, which seems unlikely, then they will use the local for traditional offices. The building the college proposes to take over is a steel-frame structure with a shingle roof and brick veneer, and was built in 2008. The city's Comprehensive Plan labeled the site as mixed-use, so both commercial and residential concerns can be located there.
