Process open now to obtain tourism grants

The City of Williamsburg recently announced that Phase 1 of the application process for the Tourism Development Fund (TDF) is open. Any project in the city that will increase the number of patrons coming to the events, hotels, attractions, and restaurants here can apply.

The TDF was adopted in 2017 by the Williamsburg City Council, as a method of encouraging people to visit Williamsburg and its attractions. To do this, it provides reinvestment and financial assistance for such measures as destination marketing, public-private partnerships, special events, place-making efforts, and tourism products. Funds for the TDF come from part of a sales tax of 1% that was set by the Virginia Senate in 2018.

The application for Phase 1 of the process is mostly a short description of the project. These preliminary documents will be reviewed by city staffers who will determine if the project is eligible to receive funds. The purpose of the introductory application is to save people the time and expense of preparing a complete application for a project that won’t ultimately qualify.

If the application’s Phase 1 effort is approved, the applicant will be invited to send in Phase 2, which will be much more detailed. Phase 1 applications have to be returned to the city no later than March 29.
