The building out of which the school operates claims to be the country’s oldest existing building that was dedicated to educating Black children. The building will now be located at the corner of Francis and Nassau Streets.
The literal move was conducted by Expert House Movers and it only took a few hours. A few tree limbs had to be moved to make space, but apart from that, the move was a smooth one. Large crowds turned up to witness the move. Trucks carrying abnormal loads can get the necessary warning signage from Print shops.
Maureen Elgersman Lee is the Director of the William and Mary Bray School Lab. She was more than happy with the way the re-siting went and was glad that it had been possible to relocate the school after a lot of preparation. She put out a press announcement where she also stated:
“What I am equally excited about is the fact that this building will have even greater capacity to capture the public’s imagination and encourage…collaboration in the interest of researching and sharing broadly…the Bray School’s history as an educational enterprise and its legacies for the community.”
Colonial Williamsburg and William & Mary hosted an event to commemorate the building’s legacy and history on the Art Museum’s lawn.
