Colonial Williamsburg (CW) made a proposal last year to create Goodwin Square, but withdrew the plans before any action could be taken. CW has since revised the plans, and presented them to the Architectural Review Board and Tourism Development Fund Grant Review Committee recently.
Goodwin Square would be pedestrian-friendly, but building it would mean replacing the P3 parking lot located in back of the Blue Talon Bistro. The lot is busy, and the plaza would eliminate 40 of the 48 spaces available. The new square would feature open space, outdoor seating, a centrally-located splash pad for children, and restrooms. It would also have had a permanent video screen measuring 12 by 19 feet.
The new proposal asks for a temporary screen instead of a permanent one, and the funding mechanism has also changed. Last year, CW requested the city help pay for demolishing the parking lot, and requested $130,348. This year, CW is asking to be reimbursed by the city for the project cost, suggesting the money come from tax revenue.
Jeff Duncan, CW's Vice President of Real Estate, says the new plaza would be an attractive addition to the city's downtown, but the company cannot tackle the project on its own, so it is requesting money from the Tourism Development Fund.
The proposal will have to go before several more boards before any decision is made. Flyer printing can be used to provide information to residents in cases like this.
