Gamers set to muster in Williamsburg

An unusual convention is set to meet in Williamsburg soon.

The Williamsburg Muster Wargaming Convention will bring enthusiastic gamers together for a weekend of fun and strategy. A wargame can be thought of as a recreation of a military battle, campaign, or situation, but one in which the players are in control—unlike the chaos of actual warfare. Gamers may play to learn more about a particular battle, or because of the intellectual challenge.

The convention is being presented by the Old Dominion Military Society (ODMS) with this year's theme: “War at Sea.” Naval wargaming is more unusual than playing land-based games, but is still a large part of wargaming in general. An article on the ODMS website discusses the evolution of naval wargaming, discussing the history of naval warfare from the ancient Romans to today's modern navies. Many times, miniature ships were used to visualize naval formations, a sort of wargaming in itself.

In addition to the war games, there will be vendors on hand, a hospitality suite, a raffle, and board games.

The convention will run February 14, 15, and 16, starting at 9.00 am on the 14th and ending at 5.00 pm on the 16th. The venue is the Clarion Hotel Williamsburg on Richmond Road. Flyer printing can be used to create handouts for events like this, listing the various games and where they are located, as well as information about the venue.
