The proposed location is situated in an area designated as a Corridor Protection District. This is a significant municipal entrance route, and is next to Colonial Williamsburg's Visitor Center. Because of its location, it will need clearance from the Architectural Review Board.
The enclosed sports complex will have 36 courts for pickleball, 24 courts for volleyball, and 12 courts for basketball. It will cover about 160,000 square feet.
According to a county news press release, the stated goal for this new sports installation is to:
“Grow and improve Greater Williamsburg’s sports offerings while attracting teams and tournaments to boost sports tourism in the area.”
The regional facility got approval to be built on land in the city in 2022, according to a preliminary agreement between construction company MEB and HTRFA. HTRFA is a governing organization consisting of representatives from the three towns that make up the Historic Triangle.
On the project's design team are the architectural companies Guernsey Tingle, Clark Nexsen, and Timmons Group. Graphic design could be used to project a building’s final design.
HTRFA stated the project's review process will take place over the next six months. It will involve a review of the site plan by the city’s staff as well as the Williamsburg Planning Commission. The rezoning request will necessitate public discussions.
