Vienna workshop to help students improve writing skills

Children and teens in Vienna can attend an online workshop this August that teaches participants about strengthening their writing.

The upperclassmen at McLean High School will be holding a virtual Zoom class where students can learn about writing fictional and non-fictional short stories, journalistic articles, essays, and poetry. Those in the course can submit their pieces to receive feedback from the workshop teachers. Attendees also have an opportunity to get their work published in The Highlander, a newspaper operated by students who go to McLean High School.

The Highlander is a printed community paper that provides news coverage on local events for high schoolers, parents, and teachers. The newspaper aims to replicate a professional newsmagazine format, using subscriptions to fund the production of each issue. Those interested in supporting the school paper can become a subscriber for $25. Print shops can help student-run organizations like this by creating Banners and Posters that advertise their newspapers.

The writing workshop will be held on Thursday, August 13. Kids between the ages of nine and twelve can attend the class from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, while teens can join a later session from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. There is no price for the course, though students must register to join the virtual workshop. Anyone who wants to read The Highlander can visit the newspaper’s website.
