Wayfair to experiment with pop-up store in Tysons

A popular online store featuring items of furniture and home décor will step out of the virtual world to open a “pop-up shop” in the real world at Tysons Corner Center.

Pop-up shops are temporary locations where retailers set up shop for a limited period of time that may be as little as a few days or as long as several months. Located just three miles from McLean, The Wayfair Décor & Inspiration Shop, according to a report issued by the Washington Business Journal, will begin a three-month run starting the first of August.

Wayfair’s website has over 14 million products for sale and approximately $15.2 million active customers. The company’s rapid growth is reflected in its over 400 percent increase in sales from 2014’s $1.3 billion to 2018’s $6.8 billion.

Pop-ups give retailers a preview of how a brick-and-mortar store might do in an area. Ideally, a pop-up store will be promoted heavily before opening. Banner printing used at the planned for site of a pop-up store will accomplish this in an efficient manner.

Wayfair has opened an outlet store in Florence, Kentucky this year, and has plans for a Natick, Massachusetts brick-and-mortar store this fall. Plans are also underway for Durham, N.C.; King of Prussia, Pennsylvania and Schaumburg Illinois to have pop-up stores as well.
