Fairfax County has put pen to paper on solar power purchase deals with a trio of solar developer teams.

These power purchase agreements (PPA) are being called the commonwealth’s largest initiative by any local municipality.

Service providers of the power purchase agreement will own solar installations, install, maintain, and manage them. Solar installations will comprise photovoltaic arrays at over 100 county schools, park sites, and government buildings in McLean and other Fairfax areas.

The power purchase agreements will over the contracts terms produce renewable energy in the amount of 1.73 million megawatt hours. This is enough to power around 214,000 homes for a year.

Fairfax County officials say that the contracts last 25 years and will render a potential ultity costs savings of $60m.

Fairfax County Executive Bryan Hill made the follow statement regarding the solar power purchasing agreements:

“Fairfax County is excited to take a major step toward a more sustainable energy future. Implementing on-site solar will hopefully lower our electricity costs as we support our Board of Supervisors adopted priorities.”

Three teams were given PPA contracts, although Fairfax County has not disclosed the financial terms.

An Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination was recently been established to assume responsibility for the county’s new climate action and energy plan.
