The $2.3 million approved by the Virginia General Assembly will get the ball rolling on a design for a STEM-focused science center in Loudon County that will serve the surrounding area.
An extension of the Richmond-based Science Museum of Virginia, developed in collaboration with the Children’s Science Center in Fairfax, is expected to serve about 300,000 annually. Museums often make Promotional Products available for purchase to help with operating costs.
The new STEM-focused facility will be in Dulles on donated Kincora development land. It will be 10 times larger than the Fair Oaks Mall Children’s Science Center facility.
Key to obtaining funding, according to museum officials, has been the support of elected officials both on the local and state levels. The public-private partnership has a pledge of $15m from the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors.
The new science center has received support from a variety of government and private organization including chambers of commerce throughout the area, among which is the McLean Chamber of Commerce.
The development of a comprehensive master plan for the center was put together in 2017 via donations from donor families, as well as grants from the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation and Fairfax Education Foundation.
Engineers and architects will be chosen and charged in the next stage of the project with creating detailed designs for the facilities as well as the exhibits. A final cost of more than $70m is projected for the new science center.
