The United States’ most respected science and math competition, the Regeneron Science Talent Search, has announced that two of McLean’s Potomac School’s seniors are among the 300 selected for the 2020 competition.
The 300 competitors were chosen from 1,993 applications and include Potomac students Katherine Plazaand Evrim Ozcan, age 17 and 18 respectively. The selected scholars were from 49 states, Washington D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico, and eight countries. Each of the chosen students, as well as their schools, will receive $2,000 each. The announcement of those chosen to compete was made by sponsor Regeneron and the Society for Science & the Public
A banner printing service is often employed to announce and celebrate both academic and athletic victories. The competition provides students with a national stage to present their research. The youngsters tend to bring a different perspective to momentous global challenges with their project covering subjects from environmental science to health and medicine.
Wednesday, January 22 is the big day on which the 40 finalists are named. Those 40 will have the opportunity to compete for over $1.8 million in awards, with the winner receiving $250,000. Past Regeneron Science Talent Search winners have later gone on to win two Fields Medals, five Breakthrough Prizes, 11 National Medals of Science, 13 Noble Prizes and 21 MacArthur Foundation Fellowships.
The final competition takes place in Washington, DC from March 5 to 11.
