McLean company sold for $1.65bn

An agreement has recently been made between New York City-based Veritas Capital and Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) of Newport News, Virginia, for the sale of Alion Science and Technology.

Huntington Ingalls will buy Alion, which is located in McLean, for $1.65bn in cash. According to the company, it anticipates fiscal revenues from Alion of $1.6bn in 2022.

Alion provides data analytics, cyber solutions, military simulations and training, as well as research and development for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance for the intelligence community and Department of Defense, with the Navy accounting for about a third of its annual revenues.

The presence of large employers is a big selling point for chambers of commerce that are collaborating with brochure printing services to entice those looking to relocate.

HII has been on something of a buying spree lately with the purchase of Alion being the latest for the military shipbuilding giant. In January this year, HII purchased the autonomy business of Spatial Integrated Systems and acquired Hydroid in 2020. Also in 2020, it launched an alliance with Kongsberg Maritime, accomplished an equity investment in the Massachusetts company of Sea Machines Robotics, and began construction on a new facility in Hampton, Virginia.

Huntington Ingalls and Veritas anticipate a closing on their deal sometime before the end of 2021, upon which Alion will become part of HII’s Technical Solutions division.
