Herndon food establishment receives highest safety recognition

An honor for excellent food safety and employee education practices was given to 10 restaurants and establishments, which are now officially among the safest in Fairfax County.

The Fairfax County Health Department gave the “14 Carrot Gold Food Safety Excellence Award” to Atrium Catering and Event Design in Herndon, which was one of the 10 eateries. At its most recent inspection last month, there were no violations in the inspection of the café.

There are 3,400 establishments with permits in the county, from which environmentalists select the winners. Those who are eligible should not have had any violations of a critical nature over the past two years and no more than six violations of a non-critical nature over the past year. Health inspectors, members of the public, and others in the food service industry are tasked with nominating the restaurants and establishments.

Pieter Sheehan, environmental health director, commented that this program was established so that those establishments that placed a high importance on food safety policies and practices would be recognized. He added that although every facility that serves food needs to meet certain requirements, the 10 establishments that were selected go “above and beyond” what they need to do.

Flyers are often used to publicize recognitions such as this one, which can lead to increased patronizing by those in the community.
