What's in a name?

Herndon is named in honor of William Lewis Herndon, a U.S. Naval officer and explorer, who saved the lives of many of his passengers when he was captain of the SS Central America. The ship foundered in a hurricane off the Outer Banks of North Carolina in September 1857, but Herndon was able to get 152 women and children off the ship before it sank. Although he remained with his doomed ship, his heroism is commemorated in the name of the city. The U.S. Navy later named two of its ships USS Herndon. In addition, the Herndon Monument, which honors the captain, is located at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

The city and surrounding area are rich in history, and several local organizations are devoted to preserving the past. For many similar concerns, brochure printers have created colorful, interesting Booklets that guide visitors to explore historic locations on their own.

Growth and development

As is often the case, it was the arrival of the railroad, which came through the area in the 1850s that led to the town's development. In 1879, Herndon was incorporated, and became closely connected to the railroad (the Alexandria, Loudoun and Hampshire; later known as the Washington and Old Dominion), which shipped the milk of local dairy farmers to Washington, D.C., daily for processing and distribution.

The railroad also brought city residents from the metropolis to the country, allow them some relief from Washington's humid summers. Herndon boasts several large summer houses from this era.

Looking back at the city's history is made easy by flyer printing companies, who can create handouts that make it simple for visitors to find and enjoy historic buildings.

Technology central

Forbes Magazine dubbed the Dulles Technology Corridor, which includes Herndon, the “Netplex,” due to the number of technology companies here. XO Communications is headquartered here, as is Network Solutions, which at one time administered every domain name. Other technology companies in the area include AOL and Verizon Business (which was formerly called MCI).

The Dulles Technology Corridor is the name given to the various cities and towns located between and along Virginia State Route 7 (the Leesburg Pike) and Virginia State Route 267, which is the Dulles Toll Road. Communities in the corridor besides Herndon are Ashburn, Sterling, Reston, and Tysons Corner. There are so many technology and defense companies here that Atlantic Magazine called the stretch “The Silicon Valley of the East.”
