Andrew Thomas, owner and operator of the Wellborne Cinema Four in Alvin, recently announced that he plans to open a second Showboat Drive-In Theater in Pearland by the summer of 2017. Hockley is the location of the first such theater.
According to Thomas, he is considering two locations for the theater, both being close to Highway 6. One is near County Road 99 and the other further north by about a half-mile. Once he decides on the location, he may use Banners at the site to announce the opening date of the theater and its various offerings.
Thomas added that construction is minimal in comparison to an inside venue. Buildings are needed for projection and concessions, but the rest is just moving dirt around.
Thomas commented that the drive-in is making a comeback, along with old vinyl records. Parents are finding a drive-in movie to be nostalgic, while teens and college students are finding it to be ideal for hanging out with friends or going out on a date.
There will eventually be four screens at the theater with double features. Concessions will offer traditional theater fare, as well as chicken fingers, hamburgers, and other quick meals and fast food. As the Hockley location is starting to have food trucks, these may also come to the theater to offer a greater variety.
