The Central Library in Irving is closed, having shut its doors for the final time on January 31, but will move to a new location.

Although the books and files are being transferred to a state-of-the-art library in South Irving, for many patrons losing the central library is like losing a second home

Judy Gafford, who is a senior assistant and has been with the library for 25 years, said she had seen many changes, including the introduction of technology, and although the new branch is exciting, she will miss the central location, which has stood since 1986.

The new library is directly across from City Hall, and library staff is now moving shelving and books. The building is a modern facility, and features a computer lab, a special children's area, and an area of quiet space in which people can sit and read—something library patrons requested.

The library is scheduled to open March 21 at 9:30 am, with a ribbon cutting. Family friendly programs, demonstrations, and tours will be held from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and Elizabeth Eulberg, a YA author, will be on hand from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. On March 22, the library will host a tea dance with a Pride and Prejudice theme, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Library officials could work with a banner printing company to create a colorful item to celebrate the opening.
