Jazz in the air near Irving

A concert is planned near Irving that should have jazz enthusiasts ready to make the quick trip to Grand Prairie.

The “Live Jazz Under the Stars” event will take place at Lone Star Park, with Kirk Whalum, Marion Meadows, Vivian Green, and Alex Bugnon making up the lineup.

Memphis-born saxophonist Kirk Whalum is also a songwriter who spent over seven years touring with Whitney Houston. He was the featured soloist in her mammoth hit single, “I Will Always Love You,” and won a Grammy for his song, “It's What I Do.”

Composer and saxophonist Marion Meadows, meanwhile, is known for his smooth jazz style, and released “For Lovers Only,” his first album as a bandleader, in 1990. He is often heard on smooth jazz radio, and tours throughout the world.

Philadelphia native Vivian Green is a songwriter, pianist, and vocalist. She is credited with having written the song “Dear God,” performed by Boyz II Men on their album “Evolution.”

Jazz pianist Alex Bugnon is from Caux, Switzerland, near Montreux and its acclaimed Jazz Festival. He trained in Paris, then moved to Boston where he heard R&B, funk, and jazz. “Love Season,” his first album, earned a nomination at the Soul Train Awards as Best Jazz Album, and won him the “Best New Artist” Award from Black Radio Exclusive.
