Mainstage Irving-Las Colinas will present ‘Five Women Wearing the Same Dress’, directed by David Canright, next month.

The dress in question is a bridesmaid’s dress, and the five women are the bridesmaids who have reluctantly taken part in a lavish wedding. During the reception, the five hide in a bedroom upstairs, determined not to be dragged into the party going on downstairs.

As the party drags on, the women discover they have a common bond, which they explore in scenes that can alternately make the audience members laugh and then bring them to tears. That bond is the suffering each of them has endured, in some form or another, at the hands of men they have trusted and loved. Their shared history is symbolized by the dress they all wear.

The play is the work of Alan Ball, who also wrote ‘American Beauty’ and the HBO shows ‘Six Feet Under’ and ‘True Blood’.

Five Women Wearing the Same Dress opens January 20, 2017 at the Dupree Theater in the Irving Arts Center, and runs through February 4. Evening shows are at 7:30 pm, and matinees are at 2:30 pm on Sundays. Tickets are on sale now.
