Students in Irving, Texas, received scholarships during the annual ‘Breakfast with the Stars’ last month.
The Irving Schools Foundation awarded more than $244,000 in scholarship monies to students at the 28th annual celebration, held on April 28 at the Irving Convention Center.
Jose Parra, the superintendent of schools in Irving, said that although the money is obviously important to the students, he was also interested in hearing what they had to say about their goals and beliefs. Parra noted that when donors hear from the students directly, it has a great impact. He also noted that the students tend to believe that respect, courtesy, perseverance, and hard work pay off.
WFAA-TV anchor John McCaa, who emceed the breakfast, pointed out that it was not only nice to hear about young people engaged in positive actions, it was necessary. Too many news stories are about teens and youngsters who are in trouble, thus adding to the perception that all kids are troublemakers. McCaa said that simply was not the case, and he was glad to see positive coverage for a change.
The foundation gave out 127 college scholarships to students, as well as 10 others that went to staff and teachers. There were approximately 650 students in competition for the honors.
