What's Happening in Irving, TX…

Members of Irving's fire and police departments recently completed a training exercise that involved a simulated collision between a vehicle and a train.

The ‘accident’ took place near the intersection of Rogers and Rock Island roads, and the scene was set with a white van parked across the tracks. In the scenario, the driver was not hurt, but there were injuries among the passengers.

Some of the first responders carried passengers away from the van, while others brought first aid supplies and backboards from their vehicles. Two passengers were strapped to the backboards and loaded into waiting ambulances.

According to Jason Carriere, speaking on behalf of the Irving Police Department, the training was designed to address the way first responders would deal with a train/vehicle collision at this intersection. The exercise is particularly important since the police and fire departments would have to work together in case of such an accident. The police would manage security at the scene of the accident and provide support to the firefighters, who would handle most of the rescue.

The November 1 exercise included Irving's Fire and Police Departments, as well as personnel from the Trinity Railway Express, a commuter rail line that runs between Ft. Worth and Dallas, and Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART).
