Construction of Fire Station 12 should be finished sometime in March, 2017.

The new station, which comprises 12,000 square feet and had its groundbreaking in April, will be sited in north Irving, close to the Hackberry Creek subdivision. The location of the new station was chosen so that response times to emergencies in the Valley Ranch, La Villita, and Hackberry Creek neighborhoods would be reduced, as studies done in 2013 found response times in the area were several minutes too long.

The Irving Fire Department has several projects in motion to help it in its mission to protect lives and property. In July, construction started on a training facility. The Irving-Grand Prairie Fire Training Facility, which is near Belt Line Road and State Highway 161, is state-of-the-art.

In addition, the department will increase its fleet of vehicles by adding two 100-foot tiller-ladder fire trucks. This type of truck is sometimes called a hook-and-ladder; it has a 100 foot ladder, and there is a second steering wheel on the back of the rig to help steer the exceptionally long chassis. One of the two new trucks will go to Fire Station 12, and the other to Fire Station 3.
