Irving celebrates its diversity at Legacy Gala

On November 20 this year, the Irving Schools Foundation held its fifth Legacy Gala in Las Colinas, at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas.

The event, which brought educators, sponsors, and local business leaders together, was filled with dancing and food, and raised money for students in the Irving School District via an auction.

The theme of the gala, ‘A Wild Night in Madagascar’, combined entertainment and decorations drawn from the culture of the island. The Mistress of Ceremonies was Cathy Whiteman, who produces and hosts ‘About Towne’, a program seen on the Irving Community Television Network.

Whiteman said the thing she finds most exciting about the annual gala is that every penny raised goes to help a teacher or student in the Irving Independent School District.

Whiteman also enjoyed the Madagascar theme, which celebrates the diversity found in Irving. There are more dialects and languages spoken here than in any other North Texas school district. The changing themes of the galas reflect that—last year it was India, this year it is Madagascar, and plans for next year call for a ‘From Russia, with Love’ setting.

Gala planners could build on this year's success by working with a newsletter printing company on a letter, with photos, for mailing to district residents. The letter could ask people to look for next year's event, and save the date.
