The city of Irving has announced details for its annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to take place this January.
The city will commemorate the federal holiday with an observation event to honour Dr. King’s memory as well as African-American culture in the Irving area. The Dallas Black Dance Theatre group and Kamica King will be performing a mixture of music, spoken word poetry, and dance inspired by King’s ideals. The observation is one of the city’s annual traditions, with past editions also including modern dance pieces and other artistic elements.
The celebrations will also include an essay contest for public school students in Irving, with different categories for grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Participants must write a 500-word essay on Dr. King’s life and work. Judges will select essays from each category to be read at the observation ceremony by the writer. Municipal culture and heritage events use contests like this as well as methods like brochure printing and interactive activities to help communicate historical information. Admission to the observance will be free for audience members.
The City of Irving’s 2025 Martin Luther King Jr. Day observation will take place on the evening of January 13, the Saturday before the official holiday, at the Irving Arts Center’s Carpenter Performance Hall. Essay competition entries will be due by January 6.
