Irving adding more fun to the holidays

Irving is getting set to celebrate the holidays, and is adding something new to its celebrations this year.

Irving is planning its annual Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting, which takes place in the Heritage District. This year, for the first time, the city is adding lights to the procession. Light-covered floats will make their way through the Heritage District, a historic area of downtown Irving.

This year, the theme of the celebration is Santa's North Pole Workshop. Float designers have been challenged to create floats that reflect that theme, and with lights now part of the decorations, organizers hope the parade will be bigger and brighter than ever. There are four categories in which the floats will be judged: Best Use of Lights, Best Themed, Best Overall, and Santa's Choice.

One thing has not changed – Santa's appearance. The Jolly Old Elf will appear on the final float in the parade, officially starting the holidays in Irving.

This year's tree is 30 feet tall, and people who want to see it lit should head to City Hall's east lawn after the parade. Fireworks will end the evening. Admission and parking are free, but beverage and food vendors will be on site.

The parade is scheduled for December 7, starting in the Heritage District at 5:00 pm. The tree lighting is at 6:00 pm, and the fireworks will start at 7:00 pm. Flyer printing can be used to create handouts describing the timing of events like this.
