History
In 1903, Otis Brown and J.O. “Otto” Schulze founded the town that would become today's Irving. Legend has it that Washington Irving, author of such classic tales as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle, was one of Otis' wife’s favorite authors, and she chose his last name as the name of the new community. The area that became Irving was first established in 1889, and was originally known as Gorbit. In 1894, the name was changed to Kit, and the town was finally incorporated as Irving in 1914. Otis Brown was its first mayor. Today, the Irving Heritage Society maintains the historic Heritage House, as well as records that provide information about local history. A planned community
Las Colinas, one of the United States' first master-planned communities, lies on over 12,000 acres in Irving. The size of the development once made it the biggest mixed-use project in the Southwestern United States. Local Ben Carpenter, a cattle rancher, founded Las Colinas in 1972 and based it on his weekend getaway, which in English was called ‘the little ranch of the hills’. Carpenter had a vision of the area as a mixed-use development that would provide additional residences, office towers, and lakes to complement those located in the Dallas downtown.
Las Colinas features golf courses, hotels, and two famous attractions: the Las Colinas Flower Clock, and the Mustangs of Las Colinas, the largest sculpture of horses in the world. Las Colinas is likewise home to a number of Fortune 500 companies, including Exxon Mobil. Many business travelers find staying in Las Colinas to be as pleasant as it is convenient. In 2011, Irving finished building the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas, continuing to make this part of the city attractive to tourists and business travelers alike. Education and business
Irving's growth was generally slow, but manufacturing companies moved here, as did the University of Dallas, which opened its Irving campus in 1956.
