Campaign to Clear the Shelters a huge success

Saturday, July 23, was a great day for pets across the nation. On that day, the Irving City Animal Shelter, along with 67 other area shelters, and hundreds more across the country, waived adoption fees in the hope of encouraging people to come and give the animals a forever home.

The event was a huge success, and shelters everywhere were empty by the end of the day.

Irving Animal Services began the effort in 2014, in sync with the Dallas-Fort Worth Humane Society. That year, the NBC network sponsored the day, and shelters in North Texas helped 6,000 pets find homes. The following year, encouraged by the success of the first day, NBC took the idea nationwide. Almost 20,000 pets were adopted in 2015 from 400 shelters across the country.

This year, the event was a success once again, with all the animals adopted. Steven Frioux, an Irving resident, said his family had come to the shelter looking for an orange tabby cat, but instead adopted two brown-and-black tabbies who were so adorable they had to take them home.

Gayle Bowker, another Irving resident, came to adopt a second dog as a companion for the active dog she already has. She said she was excited that she would be taking home a little brother for the first pooch.
